Seven Cozy Mountain Getaways in the Cascade Range

By Matt Wastradowski

Imagine waking up to birdsong bouncing off the old-growth forest around you, sipping coffee next to a crystal-clear river, savoring the charms of a country cottage, and kicking back around a crackling firepit.

Just outside the Willamette Valley and in the heart of the Cascade Range, that setting isn’t the stuff of fantasy—but rather an easy getaway that’s just about one hour from some of the region’s busiest communities.

Whether you’re booking a romantic getaway, planning a relaxing family weekend, or are taking part in our annual Ornament Hunt during the holiday season, numerous cabins, cottages, and lodges are ready to welcome you with hot-spring pools, verdant surroundings, and luxe details. Here are seven popular mountain getaways in the Cascade Range to help inspire your next adventure.

Loloma Lodge traces its roots to 1928, when a log cabin was constructed along the quiet shores of the McKenzie River. What began as a cozy outpost has transformed over the decades into a luxurious escape that today hosts a variety of comfortable overnight stays—effortlessly blending rustic vibes and modern offerings.

Four riverside cabins at Lololma Lodge date back to the 1960s, and each features amenities that range from functional (like a full kitchen and plush queen bed) to lavish (including a wood-burning fireplace and heated stone floors). You can also choose a well-appointed room in the Loloma Lodge, which was built in the early 1930s, or book a spacious family cabin—which opened in 1927 and actually predates the lodge.

Just across Highway 126 from the McKenzie River, and down a forested backroad, sits the bucolic Horse Creek Lodge. In all, Horse Creek hosts three cabins that sleep four to six, as well as a fourth that sleeps up to 16, and delivers a wooded getaway that's enchanting in all four seasons.

Each home sits amid a towering forest of Douglas-fir and comes with a fully equipped kitchen, comfortable beds, and a wood-burning fireplace. Other offerings vary among the lodgings but may include a barbecue and covered porch. An electric-vehicle charger is also available.

If you're up for outdoor recreation around the McKenzie River and in the surrounding Cascades, Horse Creek Lodge has you covered with rentals (snowshoes in winter—and mountain bikes, stand-up paddleboards, and kayaks the rest of the year), guided whitewater rafting trips in spring and summer, and shuttles to popular mountain-bike trails.

It's hard not to have a relaxing time at Belknap Hot Springs, which offers soaking opportunities and a rustic-inspired overnight stay along McKenzie River and in the midst of a lush forest.

The spring-fed pools of hot mineral water are undeniably the star attraction; one abuts the lodge and is close enough to hear the McKenzie River rushing by, while the other—open only to overnight guests—is ringed by cedar and Douglas-fir trees a short walk away. Nudity is not permitted in either pool at the family-friendly resort, where children 5 and older are welcome to enjoy a soak.

If you're staying the night, choose among 18 basic rooms, eight cabins (most of which sleep two to six), roughly 50 RV sites, and nearly two-dozen tent sites (open April-September).

Find the right stay at McKenzie Riverside Cottage, where 13 rooms and well-kept cabins deliver a variety of experiences and elegant amenities. No matter where you stay, though, you'll hear the teal-hued channel rushing by—and might even see it from one of several riverside cottages.

Each of the homes are privately owned and, as a result, feature a different personality with various niceties. The three-bedroom, two-story Log House comes with a wraparound deck, for instance, while the Honeymoon Cottage caters to couples with a fireplace made of river rock and waterfront views.

Looking for a getaway in the heart of the Cascade foothills? Westfir Lodge & Mountain Market checks all the boxes with satisfying stays, close proximity to outdoor adventures, and plenty of easy-going charm.

The lodge itself offers eight rooms with plush bedding, terrycloth robes, air conditioning, and views of the historic Office Covered Bridge across the street. Away from the rooms, guests can unwind in a common area, stretch out in the on-site yoga room, and grab light bites—including pastries from a bakery in nearby Oakridge—from a market that's open spring through early fall.

Consider booking an extra night or two if you're excited to get outdoors. Westfir Lodge sits at the base of the Alpine Trail—one of the many legendary mountain-biking trails around Westfir and Oakridge—and near several popular hikes, hot springs, and Willamette Pass Ski Resort. Take a digital detox at Breitenbush Hot Springs, which sits 11 miles from Detroit and 63 miles from Salem—deep in the heart of the Cascades.

The resort and retreat center prioritizes spiritual wellness and does so by offering several (clothing-optional) outdoor hot-spring pools and a steam sauna, as well as yoga and meditation space.

Several of the spartan rooms were crafted with wood salvaged from the Beachie Creek Fire in 2020; cloth-sided yurts and cozy cabins are also available. Rooms are heated by geothermal radiators, and there's no Wi-Fi or cell service—so you'll enjoy rest and rejuvenation in the pastoral setting.

Camp Colton resides where the farmland and rolling hillsides of the Willamette Valley give way to the foothills of Mount Hood—and offers a secluded getaway in the midst of the natural splendor.

In all, Camp Colton comprises campsites, yurts, lodge rooms, cottages, and other overnight stays under a canopy of Douglas fir. When it isn’t hosting weddings, reunions, and other events, Camp Colton rents out those accommodations to individuals on a nightly basis—providing not just cozy overnight options but access to on-site hiking and walking trails, loaner canoes to use in the camp’s pond, and a covered fire pit for when you’d like to roast s’mores. In fall, especially, Camp Colton’s maple trees erupt in fiery hues of red, orange, and yellow. Learn more about spending the night at Camp Colton.
